Background
Israr Ali Khan is a Muslim Ayurvedic doctor from North-east Delhi. He was arrested in October 2022 under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The authorities accused him of being a member of the Popular Front of India (PFI) and “conspiring” against the government. India’s federal government banned PFI in September 2022.
According to the police, Israr Khan was previously arrested for sloganeering and was released later on. His family claimed that the police falsely implicated him, that there was no substantial evidence to prove his links with PFI, and that he was never associated with the organization. The alleged member was arrested from his house in Khajuri Khas, New Delhi.
The arrests of Muslim activists have been widely condemned by civil rights groups, citing the detention as a blatant attempt to dismantle the rights of minorities and suppress their voices.
