Habib Asgar Jamali

Jamali, a Popular Front of India (PFI) member arrested under the draconian terror law UAPA.

Background

Asgar Jamali is a human rights activist arrested under the draconian anti-terrorism law, the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). He was a member of the Popular Front of India (PFI), which India’s union right-wing government banned in September 2022, accusing the organization of “unlawful activities.”

Asgar Jamali is a local activist who was arrested along with other activists under similar charges in October 2022.

The police accused them of disrupting the peace and posing a threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India. The invocation of UAPA on activists and Muslim leaders under the false pretext of terror activities has been condemned by civil liberties groups who term it arbitrary and a blatant attack on the voices of religious minorities.
