Background
Faheem Mohammad Ramzan is the former general secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI). JeI is a social and religious organization that was banned by the Hindu nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, accusing the group of unlawful activities and leading a secessionist movement in Kashmir. Since then, the authorities have arrested many Muslim clerics, including Mohmmad Ramzan.
He is considered an influential religious figure in the valley. In an interview, he asserted that ulemas (religious scholars) must engage with the community to discuss contemporary religious and social issues. The cleric has a sizable social media following and frequently communicates with young people about religious issues.
He was arrested in September 2022 along with five other Muslim clerics. The authorities accused him of instigating the Kashmiri people and invoked the draconian law PSA, where a person can be detained for up to two years without a trial.
Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) condemned his arrest, terming it arbitrary and unjustified.
