Abdul Majeed Dar Al Madni

Abdul Majeed, a Muslim cleric from Kashmir, was arrested under the lawless Public Safety Act (PSA).

Background

Abdul Majeed is a religious leader from Kashmir affiliated with the Jamiat Ahle Hadees. He is a prominent figure who has been preaching in local mosques, promoting religious knowledge among the people while touching upon various aspects of society and opposing the influence of Western modernity in Kashmir. The preacher has millions of followers on social media, where he engages with the youth on contemporary religious issues, emphasising the special status of daughters and women in Islam and countering cultural practices such as the caste system in marriages. In September 2022, he was arrested under the draconian law PSA, where the state can detain a person for two years without a trial.

The police have accused him of “luring” the people to disturb law and order and “instigating” youth to join militancy. Abdul Majeed and several other clerics and religious scholars have been arrested under similar charges. His arrest has sparked outrage in the valley.

Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) condemned his arrest, terming it arbitrary and unjustified. Political leaders accused the Hindu nationalist government of having a communal mindset.
